What is staff paper?

Staff paper — also called manuscript paper — is ruled paper for writing music by hand. Here is what the lines mean and how to pick the right sheet.

The five lines and four spaces

A musical staff (or stave) is five horizontal lines with four spaces between them. Each line and space stands for a pitch, and a clef at the start of the staff tells you which pitches. Notes sit on the lines and in the spaces; the higher up the staff, the higher the pitch.

Staff paper vs manuscript paper

They are the same thing — two names for blank, ruled music paper. "Manuscript paper" is the older, more formal term used by composers; "staff paper" is the everyday name, especially in schools.

Choosing the right sheet

For melodies and theory, ten to twelve treble-clef staves per page is standard. For piano, use the grand staff. For beginners, fewer, larger staves are easier to write on. You can set all of this in the generator and print a sheet in seconds.
